When Alex and Elena asked us to shoot their wedding in Mykonos, Greece we said yes in a heartbeat but we could not have known just how amazing the whole experience would turn out to be. To prepare for the trip alone, Anna and I took 3 extra bags with extra cameras, underwater gear (you will have to wait till next post
) and a slew of other gadgets that we would use to document the wedding and day after shoots. Alex and Elena were the perfect clients, the kind that say yes to anything no matter how crazy and remind you of why you do this in the first place.
Nestled on a ridge in the south of the island was probably the most gorgeous setting we had ever laid eyes on in a venue. The view was breathtaking and villas were extraordinary. Alex and Elena had decided to do a first look and the venue provided a magnificent setting. Everyone was in store for a fantastic evening and by everyone I mean the some 36 friends (and a slew of others) that traveled from all over the world to see them wed, (Alaska, San Francisco, Arizona, New York, London and Netherlands to name a few), a true testament to the friendships they have with each and every one of them.
The food was as fresh as it comes, straight from the Mediterranean sea, a cornucopia of seafood on a bed of couscous. There was lobster, crab, mussels, shrimp, cockles, squid and grilled octopus (I could be forgetting some!). All the seafood had been gathered for 5 days before the wedding by the locals and brought to the wedding specifically for the event. Giant fish were grilled and presented after, much to our amazement as well as a bevy of baklava and other desserts. It was by far the most amazing feast we have witnessed (and taken part of).
Dancing would follow, including some Greek performances that were favorites!
The entire experience will go down as one we will not soon forget. The Greek people are amazingly kind and generous. They are a proud, passionate people and I learned a lot from the short time I was there. The focus shifts away from time and toward relaxation and enjoying life and all it has to offer. We really consider ourselves lucky to have been a part of something so astonishingly beautiful coupled with tradition and all that is Greece.
Alex and Elena, thank you SO much for the opportunity and for turning into such great friends (BONUS!) and inviting us into your lives and your friends lives. We are truly blessed to know you both as a couple.
